About TED and TEDx

TED is a non-profit founded by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in 1984 which devotes to Ideas Worth Spreading. It initially brought together people from the field of Technology, Entertainment and Design. The number of people expanded from small group of people then later grew globally due to the yearly and alternating TED conferences. TEDx is an independently organized TED event that allows other public or private sectors to enjoy a TED-like experience.

About TEDxManila

Having fun at TEDxManila

TEDxManila was spearheaded by Rommel Feria, a professor at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. He was the only Filipino professor to be sent to California to share his passion and later became a TED fellow at the TED Conference last 2009. Inspired and invigorated as he was after the event, he came back to the Philippines and shared what he learned with his students. He gathered up some of his friends, colleagues, students and associates to organize TEDxManila. A couple of months later, TEDxManila finally pushed through successfully. It was held at the Malcolm Hall in UP Diliman on December 5, 2009 .

TEDxManila, as all TED and TEDx events promote, aims to share ideas which are worth spreading. TEDxManila aims to inspire fellow Filipinos to do something innovative and inspirational which could help influence more people to create brilliant yet unique ideas.

TEDxManila 2009 recap

Last year, TEDxManila, themed with “Sa Isip, Sa Salita, Sa Gawa” (Through mind, words and actions), was attended by over 150 participants. It was a diverse mix of people as their status ranged from students, writers, resource people, artists to managers, company VPs, CEOs and more. It was a humbling experience to see how people treat each other equally when it comes to sharing and spreading ideas. The program consisted of two TED talks and five speakers, namely Atty. Antonio Oposa, Jr,Iliac Diaz, Melizza Tan, Graham Glass and Mark Ruiz. The speakers were amazing as they gave out their speeches with conviction and it showed that they’re passionate about what they’re doing and what they’re talking about. If you’d like to hear the speakers’ talks, visit the youtube link found at the reference below.

The video below presents Mr. Iliac Diaz as he talks over Climate Change Adaptability architectures using low-income or reusable materials.

Pretty fascinating, eh? Unfortunately, TEDxManila is a closed event. Walk-ins are not allowed to enter on the day itself. So you have to APPLY EARLY by filling up the form at http://goo.gl/2okv. Deadline for application is until the end of October. Be ready to be inspired and be rejuvenated with ideas. Apply now, and see you there!

Yesterday, I went to BarCampManila with Sheli Moscatel and Mario Carreon. To give you a short background on it,

BarCamp Manila is an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. All attendees are encouraged to share some form of technical information, be it a software development tip, tools, product demo, open source projects, software, hardware, etc. – in seven (7) minutes!

If you want to know more about it, please click here.

Overall, I had a great time listening to those interesting talks that the developers shared. I did not share anything because I am currently a student and people might think that I’m way over my head for sharing something that the developers already know. The food’s great. The venue’s very cozy as well. Sadly, some people had to stand because the space was not large enough to accomodate all attendees.

I’m wishing that the organizers will have another BarCamp next year. :P

Ubuntu Love Day Manila 2008

Ubuntu Love Day Manila 2008 is definitely fast approaching.

The Ubuntu Philippines Local Community Team (Ubuntu-PH) has organized an event called “Ubuntu Love Day Manila 2008″. This event will be held at the UP Alumni Engineers’ Centennial Hall at the University of the Philippines, Diliman Quezon City. It will start at 8:00am on August 23, 2008(Saturday).

These are the topics that are going to be discussed in that event:

  1. The Ubuntu 30 day challenge – Aileen Apolo (Google)
  2. Ubuntu on virtualization and integrating to a Windows Network – Wallen Tan
  3. Ubuntu: Saving lives (and then some) – Charo Nuguid
  4. Choice is Good! Welcome to the Exciting, Productive and Wacky World of Ubuntu Derivatives – members of UP Linux Users’ Group (UnPLUG)
  5. Ubuntu and the OLPC XO-1 – Rowen Remis Iral (OLPCPH)
  6. Kubuntu & KDE: Contributing to an International Software Project – Juan Carlos Torres (KDE Project)

One of the organizations that I am currently a member of, University of the Philippines Linux Users Group, will be sharing our experiences on the different Ubuntu Derivative. I, myself, is an avid Ubuntu Hardy user. I use Ubuntu Studio 8.04 and I am quite happy with it. I’m thinking of sharing my experiences in Ubuntu Studio as I have been using it for recording and editing my music sheets. I’m not good at piano-playing, but I can definitely play. :P

Or that I can volunteer to help the organizers with other stuff, such as manpower, technical support, usherette, etc.

I’m hoping that I can wake up early so I can share or learn some tricks with other Ubuntu users.
